History
In 1998 Sleep Scotland was funded for one year by the National Lottery Charities Board (NLCB) to investigate whether there was a need for a service dedicated to helping the families of children with additional support needs and severe sleep problems. At the end of that year there was sufficient evidence that these families needed help, and in 1999 the NLCB funded a three year project:
- To train and support Sleep Counsellors throughout Scotland
- To establish Sleep Clinics throughout Scotland
- To support parents through new and existing support groups throughout Scotland
- To establish a telephone helpline for parents and professionals
- To raise the profile of families who have children with additional support needs and severe sleep problems among public and professionals
Since its inception in 1998 Sleep Scotland has:
- 227 practicing Sleep Counsellors
- established 132 Sleep Clinics
- provided an intensive sleep programme for 1433 families representing 1466 children with addtional support needs and their 1484 siblings.
The Unmet Need - 415 Families are waiting for our service of whom 94 have lone parents and with a total of 916 children including siblings.
